Swimming
Lessons
Parent/Child & Preschool
The YMCA’s Preschool Aquatics program involves step-by-step
instruction of swimming and water safety skills which develops
children’s confidence. Some classes will use floatation
belts.
Skips: Parent/Child (6 mo-3 yrs.)
This class helps you and your child enjoy the water through game
playing, sing-alongs, and blowing bubbles. We emphasize water
safety, water adjustment skills, and basic swim movements.
Perch: 2-3 year olds
This class will cover basic swim movements, while adjusting to
being in the water without a parent. Children will wear floatation
devices during most of the class.
Pikes: 3 - 5 year olds
Children adjust to the water by blowing bubbles and gradually
putting their faces in the water. Students will also learn how
to float on their backs and paddle in the water without assistance.
Eels: 3 - 5 year olds
Children will be introduced to swimming with their face in the
water. In addition, they will start to work without a fun-belt.
Rays: 3 - 5 year olds
Children will work on the front crawl with rhythmic breathing
and be introduced to back crawl. The majority of the children
swim on their own without the aid of a fun-belt.
Starfish: 3 - 5 year olds
Kids will work on the front crawl with rotary breathing and back
crawl. This class prepares the student for the Youth Progressive
Swim Program.
Youths, 6-12 years
This step-by-step progression of swimming and safety skills enables
a child to swim safely, enjoy the water and use swimming as a
lifetime fitness sport. Class placement is determined by the student’s
skills and comfort level. We build on strengths and support personal
development over the rate of their progression. Please note --
as classes become more difficult, it may be necessary for your
child to repeat a class to effectively master the skills.
Polliwog
This class is for beginner swimmers who may show some fear of
the water. They will learn to get their face wet, to perform the
front crawl arms and to practice rhythmic breathing.
Guppy
Children must be able to swim half the length of the pool while
working on their front crawl with rotary breathing. They will
also be introduced to the back crawl.
Minnow
Children must be able to swim the length of the pool without stopping.
They will work on endurance while using the front and back crawl.
Fish
Kids work on perfecting front crawl and back crawl for 50 yards
(2 lengths of the pool). They will be introduced to the breaststroke
and butterfly kick.
Flying Fish
Must be able to swim four lengths of the pool (100 yards) using
front and back crawl. They will learn the breast and butterfly
strokes.
Shark
This class continues to refine the basics of the butterfly, back
crawl, breaststroke and freestyle strokes. They will learn flip
turns and different diving skills.
Special Note to Parents:
Parents are encouraged to register their child for classes in
which thay can be successful at their present ability levels.
It is common for most children to repeat a class more than once.
This is due to the amount of material that needs to be covered
in each session, as well as each students unique approach to learning.
Class
Schedule
Among
the Y’s many contribution’s over the past decades
is the development of swimming lessons! YMCA swim instructors
use a unique approach to teaching swimming skills that allows
students to use their individual learning styles to develop swim
skills at their own pace. Aquatic survival skills and water safety
are a major component to the YMCA swim lesson curriculum. Lessons
are available for ALL AGES!
